What To Do About Luxury Vinyl Tile Fading Over Time

What To Do About Luxury Vinyl Tile Fading Over Time

The good news is that you can do things to prevent your luxury vinyl tile flooring from fading as noticeably or as fast. Just follow these tips.

When the time comes to choose new flooring for a home makeover project, you may find yourself amazed at the variety of choices. One very popular option is luxury vinyl tile and with good reason. Luxury vinyl tiles are very affordable, for starters, offering a stylish and comfortable alternative to higher-end materials for a much smaller price. Luxury vinyl tile is so versatile that you can easily use it to replicate very high-end looks. Pretty much the only downside to luxury vinyl tile is that over time it is subject to fading. The good news is that you can do things to prevent your luxury vinyl tile flooring from fading as noticeably or as fast. Just follow these tips.

Stop The Sun

So that sounds a little dramatic, but the bottom line is that UV exposure will be the culprit for most of your floor fading. One option is to install heavy blinds or curtains to block out the sun. The problem is that most people want (and actually need) natural light exposure in their homes. If you install window film on your windows, you can block those bleaching UV rays without blocking out the light. This alone will give your vinyl tile flooring more longevity.

Rearrange The Furniture

If the entire floor faded at the same rate, you probably wouldn’t even notice it. The problem is that it doesn’t because you’ve got furniture which blocks the light. When you move those pieces of furniture, the difference between the faded and non-faded areas is stark. One thing you can do is rearrange your furniture more frequently so that any one area of the floor isn’t blocked for too long.

Clean Correctly

When it comes to using cleaners on your luxury vinyl tile flooring, make sure you’re using the proper one. It would help if you also tried not to make a habit of spot cleaning, and instead clean the whole floor whenever you’re cleaning up a spill. This way that one area (in front of the stove, for example) where you’re constantly spilling food isn’t getting scrubbed more frequently than the rest of the floor, which could lead to visible fading.

Store Some Spares

When you’re buying tile for your new floor, buy extra to potentially replace the ones that fade in high traffic areas or areas that get a lot of sun exposure. While following these other tips will make it less likely that your luxury vinyl tile fades, it still is possible over many years of use and exposure. All those years down the line, the tiles you fell in love with today may not even be on the market anymore. If you have spares stored away, you’ll be prepared to rip out the old faded parts and put down new flooring.
