In last week’s post, we explored the differences between two seemingly similar flooring materials: laminate and vinyl. Let’s dive into another comparison, this time between luxury vinyl tile, or LVT, and vinyl tile flooring. How much of a difference does the classification “luxury” make to meet your flooring needs?

Traditional or Standard Vinyl Tile Flooring
As a brief refresher, all vinyl flooring is made from synthetic layers of PVC material. Sheets of PVC are pressed onto a base layer and are topped with an embossed, photographic design layer. The designs replicate other flooring options such as hardwood or stone, but without the higher costs of the actual material.
Most standard vinyl tiles are quite thin at around 1 millimeter. Depending on the quality of the base layer or the subfloor, vinyl tiles deliver excellent results for a smaller price. Despite being so thin, vinyl’s durability is very reasonable. Just be wary of sharp objects that can scratch the surface.
The thinness of the tiles can result in feeling harder or softer under your feet based on the subfloor. Think about the feeling underfoot if you are attempting to replicate other flooring options.
Vinyl tile flooring comes in many colors and styles, although each tile tends to show the exact pattern. This repetition can give off an artificial look if you are trying to replicate wood or stone floors. Vinyl tiles in solid colors are an excellent choice for creating a cohesive look.
Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring
Luxury vinyl tiles are made with upgrades to traditional vinyl and have been marketed that way ever since. Its usual selling-point is how it is better at replicating the look and feel of natural flooring materials. Luxury vinyl is thicker than the standard at about 5 millimeters. More photorealistic prints are applied. All this, coupled with the embossing and weight from a thicker tile, lends to a more comfortable feeling underfoot.
Because traditional vinyl tiles were thinner, luxury vinyl seemed like a more durable alternative due to its added thickness. There is truth to that statement. Luxury vinyl tiles have a thicker top layer that takes the wear and tear.
Which is Better?
Vinyl tile flooring can be a more cost-effective choice that doesn’t compromise on quality. Installing luxury vinyl tiles means you are getting added durability and performance. Whatever factors in your flooring that you value more, either material offers their benefit. Standard vinyl can upgrade your hallway bathroom, but luxury vinyl is a prime choice for high-traffic businesses.
