Hardwood floors are a great asset to any home, and yours are no exception. Your hardwood floors keep your home looking sleek and classic, but it is important that they are maintained. If your hardwood floors are dull and dirty, they can really bring down the look and feel if your space. After all, you have spent a pretty penny on these floors, and you will want them looking new for years to come. Keep reading for some tips and tricks for how to best maintain your hardwood floors.

Clean Quickly

If a spill happens on your hardwoods, clean it up as quickly as possible. The spill will not stain instantly, as it would with carpet, but a spill will stain your floors if you do not wipe it up fast. Once a stain has set into your floor, you will not be able to get rid of it easily. You will have to refinish your floors completely.

In addition to cleaning up spills as soon as possible, it is important to keep up cleaning on a regular basis. Sweep your hardwoods every day or as needed. Be sure to sweep up any dirt or debris whenever you can so that particles are not able to scratch the wood. Invest in a rubber broom as it is extremely effective and safe to use on hardwood floors.

Preventative Maintenance

Preventative maintenance is the key to keeping your hardwood floors looking beautiful. By cleaning your floors regularly, you will save yourself lots of time and money in the coming years. Use a hardwood cleaner once a week on your floors to keep them looking shiny. Spray the cleaner on the floors and use a cloth or hardwood broom to buff your floor gently.

It is vital that you never use soap and water when cleaning your hardwood floors. If you mop your floors in this traditional style, you can really damage the wood. Water can seep through the cracks of the boards and possibly cause swelling, discoloration, and deformation of the boards. Go ahead and try using a microfiber mop for sleek, polished floors.

Polish Your Floors

Be sure to polish your floors regularly. If you have floors with a wax finish, also make sure that you wax it on a regular basis as well. This will help buff any scratches out of the floors, keeping them looking brand new.
