If you live in a home with pets, investing in a good vacuum is particularly important. If your carpeting reaches to high traffic areas like the front door or kitchen, you may want to consider using throw rugs or carpet protectors. Learn how to keep your carpets clean with the following tips.
If something spills on your carpet, clean it up right away. Letting spills dry can make them much harder to remove. To clean a wet spill soak up as much of the liquid as possible with a towel or rag then add a layer of baking soda to the affected area for 15 minutes. When the baking soda has dried simply vacuum away. If you find yourself with a deep set or older stain attempt to treat it with a spray bottle of vinegar and a cloth. If more power is needed saturate the stained area with vinegar and apply baking soda, letting it fully dry before vacuuming it up.
If your carpets need more intensive cleaning you may need to buy or rent a carpet cleaner. These machines use a mix of hot water and a cleaning chemical to deeply clean carpets and rugs. Before you run the machine you’ll want to prep your rugs by sweeping and vacuuming to remove any loose dirt. Next, use a pre-treatment spray (often provided with the machine rental) or vinegar to treat any stained areas. Follow the directions on the machine to add the proper amounts of cleaning solution and water. Run the machine, slowly making sure not to miss anything, and refill the water and cleaning solution, or discard dirty water as needed. Finally, let your carpets dry and they’ll be as fresh and clean as new.
Start your odor removal by thoroughly vacuuming the carpets to remove as much dirt as possible. Next, make a mixture of ½ a cup of baking soda, 1 cup of borax add two cups of cornmeal. If there are any areas that are particularly offensive pre-treat them with a solution of vinegar and water. When ready, sprinkle the cornmeal mixture over the rug, making sure that there is a thicker layer anywhere that smells more. Let the mixture sit for an hour before vacuuming it up, it may take several passes before the entire mix is removed.
